Catholic Church No Longer Swears by Truth of the Bible
by Big Dog inwith all the debate raging here about the accuracy of the bible, i thought this was an interesting article.
i've got to hand it to the catholics, when they want to be they can be a progressive bunch, probably why they have lasted so long.. catholic church no longer swears by truth of the bible.

More Creationism vs. Evolution in the news.
by Big Dog inthis caught my eye, the poll at the end is kind of scary.
on the seventh day, america went to court .
a bitter struggle is unfolding in the us about the most basic of issues: the origins of life.

You Can't Get It Back
by Big Dog inthe higher education thread got me thinking about the thing i loathe, despise, hate with the intensity of a thousand suns about the wbts, namely, the loss of my childhood.
i remember when engaging in blistering arguements with my parents about being able to play sports or take up an instrument or dream of being an astronaut, or whatever thing the society frowned on that i wasn't allowed to do at the end i would always get the same final reply, "when you are 18 and out of the house you can do whatever you want.
i can go back and play pop warner football, or little league baseball, or play in the school band, etc?

by Big Dog ini found the last couple of sentences of this article particlularly interesting.

is this dr. collins a scientific heretic/hack, or is the question of what makes us human more than a purely scientific question?scientists find chimps, people are 96 percent identical.

Where (Who) in the World is Hibiscusfire?
by Big Dog ini noticed that hibie hasn't posted since the dating thread where it was pointed out that she borrowed some of her material from other websites, blogs, etc.. hibie has quickly become a fixture here with her threads that draw responses like crazy and her unusual preaching style.
i don't think i am alone in wondering just who she really is since she seems to avoid all questions directed to her about who she is, how she came to this website, what she is trying to accomplish.. she has been called everything from mentally ill, to born again, to a troll by those on the board.. hibie, in all seriousness, i'd really like to know who you are and how you got here.
if you are a teenager having fun, that's okay, but some of the stuff on this forum isn't really appropriate for a younger teen.

How much science we take on "faith"
by Big Dog inno real point here, just a funny thought popped in my head as i was reading yet another thread where people were being hammered with scientific facts and theories and i was nodding my head agreeing with the rational fact based explination when a thought occured to me: i take quite a bit of science on "faith".. what i mean is this, when i am reading the explination of particle physics, quantum mechanics, or molecular biology i have to take it on faith as i can't do the mathematical proofs and so on to verify what i am being told and i assume that is the case with most of us non-rocket scientists, and probably even many in the fields of science and technology.
i like science, i enjoy reading discovery magazine and trying to keep up on the latest techno advancements, but i realized how much of it i take on "faith" as i have no way to verify or disprove what i am being told by a scientist.
i recall einstein saying once that something like 6 people in the world truly understood the implications of his work.. so if you want to argue "faith", i'd say that many that believe in science have just as much faith as those that believe in religion.

Why God's in a class by himself.
by Big Dog inwe all the debate that has been raging here lately i thought i would post this article that appeared in the la times, i thought the author did an excellent job of analyzing the issue.. .
why god's in a class by himselfby michael shermer, michael shermer is the publisher of skeptic magazine, a columnist for scientific american and the author of "the science of good & evil" and "science friction" (henry holt/times books).. .
intelligent design creationism resurfaced in the news last week after president bush's remarks were (mis)taken by iders to be a solid endorsement for the teaching of id in public school science classrooms.
